The enthusiasm over blockchain has yielded dozens of failed pilots where blockchain should never have been applied in the first place. This has prompted a collaborative, open-source effort to craft a Blockchain Decision Framework to determine if blockchain is appropriate for your use case BEFORE you invest. Dozens of such frameworks are being offered, but most are either designed to justify a decision or fail to properly separate requirements from opinions. We will present an effort to develop a useful framework that anyone can apply. The goal of the new framework is to first determine whether blockchain should be considered. Once answered, the framework addresses what kind of blockchain makes sense (e.g., public vs. private, permissioned vs. permissionless). Eventually we hope to then provide guidance as to what blockchain protocols make sense for each use case, but we are too early in the maturity of blockchain to go that far today.
